3. Wingfoil Alvor 🪁 Lift Off: First Flights and Controlling the Foil

Wingfoil Alvor – Congratulations! If you mastered Chapter 2, you have the necessary balance and wing control. Now it’s time to mount the hydrofoil. This adds a third, vertical dimension to your balance, making it much more challenging initially, but infinitely more rewarding.

3.1. The Foil’s Anatomy and Your Stance

Before hitting the water, understand how your feet directly control the hydrofoil’s angle of attack:

  • Front Foot (The Elevator): Applying pressure to the front foot pushes the nose of the board down, reducing the angle of attack and bringing the foil closer to the water (or stopping the ascent).
  • Back Foot (The Throttle/Lifter): Applying pressure to the back foot lifts the nose of the board up, increasing the angle of attack and generating lift (taking off).
  • The Sweet Spot: When cruising, your weight must be distributed so that the foil maintains a constant, stable height without requiring constant input. This position is almost always directly above the mast of the foil.

3.2. Water Start with the Foil

The sequence remains similar to Chapter 2, but requires more precision due to the foil’s instability and length:

  1. Kneeling Position: Get onto the board on your knees. Be extra cautious of the submerged foil; avoid shallow areas.
  2. Standing Prep: Get your front foot up first. Unlike before, you must ensure your front foot is positioned forward of the mast.
  3. The Rise: Stand up smoothly. Your goal is to keep the board flat on the water’s surface as long as possible while accelerating with the wing. Do not apply back foot pressure yet.

3.3. The Take-Off: Finding the Lift Speed

The moment you transition from gliding to flying is called the take-off. This requires a coordinated push from the wing and a precise weight shift:

  1. Accelerate: Use strong, continuous pumping of the wing (pulling in and out gently with your back hand) to gain ground speed. Keep your board on the surface.
  2. The Back Foot Cue: Once you feel the board is gliding quickly and smoothly, apply a quick, firm press on the back foot. This is the trigger. You will feel the foil immediately generate lift.
  3. The Critical Correction: The moment the foil breaches the water, immediately shift your weight forward (front foot pressure). Beginners often shoot straight up, resulting in a sudden, violent splash down (called a “porpoise”). The key is to check the lift with your front foot and level the board.

Crucial Tip: The easiest way to learn take-off is to intentionally fly too high and fall, then try to correct that height. This teaches you how quickly the foil responds to weight changes.

3.4. Wingfoil Alvor – Stabilization and Sustained Flight

Sustained flight is all about minor, continuous adjustments.

  • Height Control (The Micro Adjustments): If you fly too high, gently push the front foot down for half a second. If you start sinking, gently press the back foot. These inputs are tiny—think millimeters of foot movement, not inches.
  • Touch-and-Go Drill: An excellent exercise for building consistent control. Let the board gently touch the water’s surface (a “touch”), and then immediately re-lift it (the “go”). This practice trains your body to rapidly correct and maintain flight without falling.
  • Stance Discipline: Once flying, move your feet very little. Keep your knees bent and let your ankles and hips absorb the chop and lift changes. A rigid body means a wobbly flight.

3.5. The Unavoidable Crash

Crashing is part of the learning curve, especially with the foil.

  • Forward Falls are Safer: When you fall, try to fall forward and away from the foil mast and wings.
  • Immediate Wing Control: Upon hitting the water, immediately grab and secure the wing. Use it to pull yourself back onto the board and restart the cycle.

With consistent practice controlling the lift—getting up, finding the right height, and keeping it there—you will soon be spending more time flying than gliding.
